Oral history interview with Bill Geary , 2007 August 13.

Geary talks in detail about the night when he fell ill with polio in 1942 at age 12. He describes getting to the doctor in Storm Lake in the middle of the night and being sent to Iowa City where he spent the next 3 months. The trip to Iowa City required obtaining gas ration coupons and traveling 250 miles over poor roads in 1930 Model A Ford. When he was discharged he and his mother traveled home via train and Geary describes the difficulties they encountered on the trip because he was unable to walk. Geary discusses the trials of growing up, finding employment, and getting around with the disabilities left by his illness.

Interviewees represented counties across Iowa and ranged in age from 55 to 96 and included medical personnel, family members and friends of the afflicted, and polio survivors.
